South West Middle School

For a creative learning environment

The city of Quincy anticipated replacing a 100-year-old school building with a modern facility but had no options for an alternative building site. That meant our $60M project would be built on a steep hill, at the edge of a flood plain, and only 18 inches away from the existing school that would remain fully occupied during construction. Our experience guided us through the significant technical challenges. It also prompted us to pose a bigger question: “What would make this a great school?” Before design even began, we worked with our design team to mine the thoughts, objections, complaints, and ideas of teachers, students, administrators, and the community. Together, we created a program that truly reflects their aspirations. The result is summed up in this accolade by the mayor: “In my 11 years as mayor, I have been involved with a large number of projects, and I have never seen one run as well as this one.” It takes experience to deliver beyond expectations.
